2019 Fugio, Estate Pinot Noir

each

This wineis the perfect Yin-Yang to the UNUM, its rounder and more generous Pinot Noir sibling. FUGIO is always more brooding, ethereal, gamey less overtly fruited and needs more time to unveil itself. Fugio’s cane-pruned vines tend to present more lignification, encouraging stem inclusion through whole cluster fermentation. This adds tannins to the finished wine which in turn contributes to ageablilty. Accordingly, this wine should age well for 10-20 years

Behind the label

This bright ruby red wine is much fruiter than the 2018 vintage and immediately expresses aromas of currant, plum, strawberry and pomegranate. Well-balanced acidity, tannins, and body lead to a round mouthfeel and luxuriously long finish. This wine is drinking beautifully and will continue to become smoother, rounder and more lovely as it matures over the next decade plus.

Vineyard

The FUGIO Pinot Noir is from a four-acre block of cane-pruned Pommard situated on our steep, west-facing slopes, with dense clay and calcareous soils. Because of the FUGIO block’s steep curvature, we only select fruit from the top half of it because the drainage and wind-pressure are greatest here. By farming this precisely, we achieve more concentrated fruit, which ultimately results in a wine with a far more complex, broader and richer expression.

Production

100% native yeast. 100% whole-cluster fermented in open-top concrete cask. 16 months in 25% new French oak. 624 cases. 13.2% alcohol.
