2019 Fugio, Estate Pinot Noir

FUGIO is the perfect Yin-Yang to the UNUM, its rounder and more generous Pinot Noir sibling. FUGIO is always more brooding, ethereal, gamey, less overtly fruited and needs more time to unveil itself, while the UNUM celebrates its exuberance and is more accessible now. This wine should age well for 7-15 years.

Behind the label

FUGIO refers to the 1st U.S. Government penny designed by Ben Franklin in 1787. It features the image of a sundial, along with the message ‘mind your business’, which together are interpreted by historians to mean “time flies, do your business”. We felt that Franklin’s deliberate double-entendre of minding your business, both financially and socially, best captured our motivation to focus on our own vineyard to produce the finest wines we can.

The FUGIO Pinot Noir is from a four-acre block of cane-pruned Pommard situated on our steep, west-facing slopes, with dense clay and calcareous soils. Because of the FUGIO block’s steep curvature, we only select fruit from the top half of it because the drainage and wind-pressure are greatest here. By farming this precisely, we achieve more concentrated fruit, which ultimately results in a wine with a far more complex, broader and richer expression.
