2018 Rosa Estate Chardonnay

each

The Sta. Rita Hills region delivers some of the finest examples of Chardonnay in California because our climate is like “refrigerated-sunlight”. This results from the bright sunshine we enjoy throughout the growing season, competing again the cold winds coming from the Pacific Ocean. It is this dichotomy that creates beautiful Chardonnay that has a citrus freshness and yet a richer, fuller mouthfeel and flavor akin to something more decadent like a mix of Meyer Lemon, Yuzu and Lemon oil.

Behind the label

Delicate golden-green color of fresh lemons or hay. Enticing aromas of white flowers give way to exotic notes of macadamia nut and the minerality of briny ocean air. Citrus and nuttiness persist on the palate, joined by pit fruit, green apple, fresh herbs and white cake notes. Vibrant but restrained, this is a dynamic wine that will continue to gain complexity and elegance as it ages for 7+ years. $56 per bottle.

Vineyard

The fruit for ROSA always yields an exotic, rich and highly aromatic wine due to its north-facing exposure (less sunlight), and planting on different types of ocean based soils (Calcareous, Diatomaceous and Limestone), mixed in with our heavier clay. Because of this specific section’s striking intensity, our team feels this wine can benefit from more time, in more new oak, which only increases the wine’s fullness, richness and age-ability to 7+ years.

This is our sixth bottling of ROSA, which comes from a 2.8 acre vineyard block of the historically significant Mount Eden Selection, and demonstrates how enjoyable Chardonnay is and why it remains one of the most satisfying, expensive and celebrated wines in the world. This is particularly true when grown in great sites and regions, and approached correctly in the cellar.

Production

Barrel fermented in 100% new French 581 gallon Foudre (8 times the size of a normal barrel) with 16 months elevage. Full ML and no battonage. 100% native yeast. 582 cases. 13.3% alcohol.
